37 years ago today, my parents were married, and my biological make-up was officially cemented in a traditional catholic ceremony at st. mary's church in downtown san jose. my parents have had a very happy marriage thusfar. they are equal partners and communicate very well. they have taught me that faith, trust, love and laughter are far more important than appearances, money, power, and notoriety. i only hope that if i ever decide to get married that i can be as sucessful at it as they have been. happy anniversary, mom and dad.

crossing the bridge

Image
oh yeah. my life is about to change, and i couldn't be more excited...or more scared. what in the hell was i thinking quitting my secure and stable job (with benefits and paid vacation), to go back to school? well, i've come too far to turn back now. my semester is paid for, and i have nothing to loose. being totally unattached at 25 does have it's benefits. i get to do crazy things like this and not feel bad about it. i still struggle with the fear of failure, but i feel good about this next chapter in my life, so across that bridge i go :) i finally turned in my first roll of 120 film. they said it will take 1-2 weeks and the processing costs $5.00, plus 65 cents for each 5 * 5 print. not too bad. i have been to more concerts this summer than i have been to in the last 5 years. so far i've seen : 1. wolfmother, the yeah yeah yeahs, franz ferdinand, the strokes, and afi at bfd 2. peaches, bauhaus ( most boring fucking band i've ever seen) and nine inch nails 3. the...

my 100th post! woo hoo!!! or, how i spent my summer vacation

Image
when i was a kid, a good portion of my summer vacations were spent with my family, on the open road, in good, old, reliable betsy. yes, my parents named our motorhome. she might not look like much, but under that hood is pure grit and determination. she is a true original. there has never been a hill too steep, a highway too narrow, or a road too rocky for her, no sir. i got to thinking about old betsy because i attended a family reunion of my mother's side on saturday, and i got to see quite a few of my cousins that we had vacationed with over the years. all the memories came flooding back to us, and it was pretty neat to recall the fun times that were had by all. my memories of those people and that motorhome will forever be intertwined with those of my father who is still alive, but very ill, and was unable to attend the family reunion. betsy is his, really. his pride and joy. and since he has been gone, she just isn't the same. she may be down, but she's not out. not ev...

these are a few of my favorite things

oh my! the past few weeks have been very fun and busy for me. i have spent most of my time shuffling between home and santa cruz, with a brief (but totally funtastic) visit with a good friend in san francisco, in between. a few suggestions for your next sf trip: -take BART it's cheap (only $10 round trip from fremont to san francisco) and easy to navigate, plus on spare the air days, it's free! -stay at the mosser hotel a wonderfully cozy and charming (not to mention so affordable) boutique hotel centrally located on 4th street @ market. -go to the view lounge on the 39th floor of the san francisco marriott. breathtaking views of the city. we were there at sunset and it was perfect. yummy cocktails too! summertime in santa cruz means on thing to me 65 cent nights at the santa cruz beach boardwalk. this means every monday and tuesday night after 6 between memorial day and labor day (with the exception of 3rd and 4th of july) all rides, hot dogs, pepsi, and most important ele...

captain jack will get you high tonight

Image
and take you to his special island! a girl can dream, right? i saw pirates of the carribean last night. wow! what a fun ride! johnny depp is so effing hot i thought the screen was going to spontaneously combust ;) -i finally got the 620 film for my kodak duaflex IV . then i fumbled through loading it, but it is loaded and i have been shooting. i can't wait to see what it produces. -i saw peaches, bauhaus, and nine inch nails over the weekend. unfortunately: 1) we were a little late, and we missed most of peaches set :( (she was only allowed to play for like, 30 minutes) but on the plus side, we got to see her sing the teaches of peaches during which she stripped down to her hot pink bra and booty shorts, and ran through the crowd dancing with people and drinking their beers. she is awesome, and damn can she wail! 2) bauhaus were on forever . they are old and boring. the highlight of their set was when peaches joined them for one song. this time she came out in a figure skati...

keepin' it cool

Image
i was able to escape the heat for awhile and join my family at the coast. 1. filling up the kiddie pool for my nephew zachary. of course it looked so inviting that i joined him. this is an excellent and cheap alternative to the real thing. my roommates in college often joked about getting one for the bottom of our driveway. we so should have done it. 2. calamari from capitola institution, zeldas . i hate zeldas. they are overpriced and have terrible service, but the calamari is super yummy, and since they are right across the street, i just ordered for takeout. 3. the front lawn through a kalidescope. i saw zack's little kalidescope sitting on the table, so i decided to experiment. this is the front lawn. i think they look like cucumber slices. i ordered some 620 format film for my box camera. 2 rolls of color and 2 of black and white. they should come this week, and i can't wait to experiment!

popcorn. peanuts. packing material. oh my!

Image
my new baby camera came today...hurray! i can't wait to get some film to shoot with. yosemite was a blast. everything was so beautiful. i shot 3 1/2 rolls, so i can't wait to share those too. ugh. summer is offically underway. the weather report calls for triple digits over the next few days. i hope i can survive :) i hate hot weather. if it's over 80, i'm dying. has anyone but me been watching my fair brady ? they are such a trainwreck, but i really like adrienne for some reason. i do think she could do so much better, though. i really miss grey's anatomy having...serious....withdrawals...god i need to get a hobby. any suggestions?

yosemite is for lovers

Image
yeah! we leave tomorrow! i am so excited to be going back to yosemite. it has been about 12 years since i was last there. one of the things i am hoping for the most (besides perfect weather) is that the falls (like the one in the above photo. copyright 1980. by donald joseph purdy.) will be actively flowing. the sound and sight of the rushing water is totally calming and beautiful. by the time i get back, there will be plenty of pictures to share. i just picked up another 4 pack of film last night. i promise though, it won't be 96 pictures of waterfalls. at least no more than 10 ;)

i *heart* parker posey

after watching the house of yes last week, and i thought only parker posey could have pulled off a performance like that in a movie like that, and still remain likeable. she's craaazzyy and i looooooove it! i will watch superman returns just for her. she wrote this for esquire magazine: * number 8 made me laugh out loud Ten Things You Don't Know About Women By Parker Posey | Jul 1, 2006 1. Compulsive hair playing equals great, unbridled passion, but not necessarily directed toward you or toward anyone in particular. In my latest book, The Secret Language of Hair, I attempt to bridge the communication gap between hair gesture and meaning. 2. You know those places that only sell smell-good, girlie products? There is a patron saint of these places—perhaps a cult leader—and that's all I can say. 3. When you see a woman chewing gum, she is counting. Next time you see a woman chewing gum, ask her what number she's up to. 4. Personally, I'm not one for lingerie. It would...

99 cent memories

Image
within a few short days, i will add the kodak duaflex IV to my family of cameras. i bought it off ebay for 99 cents, and i can't wait to get some 620 film and shoot some stuff. first of course, i have to learn how to work the darn thing. i was just so asthetically mesmerized with box cameras after watching a lot like love that i immediately got on ebay to look for one. i hope i can use it, but if not, it'll make for a cool decoration piece. my family and i are going to yosemite this weekend. this will be a fun but bittersweet trip. yosemite is one of my dad's favorite places in the whole world, and i am sad that he is unable to go with us. i still remember going up to yosemite falls on his shoulders and standing under them letting the mist fall on our faces. and the first and only time i went backpacking with him. i never thought we were going to stop walking. my dad can seriously walk forever . i think i'm going to test myself and see how much i can walk on this trip...

title this

i hope everyone had a nice memorial day. i spent most of it outside on the new lounge chairs my family purchased for our beach house. nothing is more relaxing than sitting in the sun. truly. i did something new this weekend: i only drank 1 beer a day. sleeping in later and waking up headache- free rocks! summer television is a total wasteland. this is good though, because it motivates you to take advantage of the long days. i'm going to try and take more walks at night before the weather becomes unbearable, and the only place i want to be is on a tile floor, in front of a huge fan. how i wish we had a pool :( i need to clear the clutter. it's starting to suffocate me.

friday night thoughts

-i stopped caring about the oc this season, but i still tape it every week and do a quick scan of the episodes. marissa's death was actually kind of sad. benjamin mackenzie played it wonderfully and understated, and dare i say, i will actually miss mischa barton. what will the oc do without it's push/pull angsty love story and the alcoholic-drug addict-attempted manslaughterer-always the victim- girl at the core of the story? RIP marissa cooper. and soon- to- be RIP the oc - i was never a faithful viewer of that 70s show , but i followed the stories enough to know that donna belonged with eric, and jackie was perfect for hyde....well. 1 out of 2 ain't bad. FEZ and JACKIE????? who thought that shit up? and weren't red and kitty too cute? -i saw art school confidential last night. i liked the commentary on art schools and the characters within, and the star, max minghella , and i love the ending..so true! but, it needed more , angelica huston . she is so elegant and to...

i am officially a member of the soul patrol

and then there were 2. my beloved elliot was given the boot on idol last night, so now to plan b. i throw my support 100% at mr. taylor hicks . why you ask? that's simple. because i can't stand katharine mcphee ! she's: -obnoxious -over-confident -ungracious -overrated -snotty -disrespectful plus she shrieks, has jessica simpson-like lame-o facial expressions, wears unflattering clothes and sings songs that are way to big for her. and based on her mother's behavior last night when it was announced that elliot was voted off, i can see where MCasshole gets her shitty MCattitiude from! what a gaped mouth BEE-OTCH that woman is! and ps., projecting your hopes for singing superstardom on your kids because you failed miserably during your heyday, is not cute. the world already has an aretha, a mariah, a whitney, a christina, and thank god, an ELLA. so that being said....GO TAYLOR!!!!! you were my 2nd favorite the whole time anyway!

i *heart* youtube

omg here are a few trips down memory lane courtesy of youtube: VIVA LA 80s TELEVISION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the jug of death

Image
this jug basically kicked my ass into next year....word to the wise, never. never ever, have someone fill this with stout.

boonville.exactly

i didn't think things could more out of control than last year, but boy, was i wrong. 10 years. 61 breweries. a shit ton of people. 1 gigantic jug that kicked my ass. my faves this year: elysian brewing company of seattle's avatar jasmine ipa effing unbelieveable! two rivers cider of sacramento's pomegranate cider and of course the 21st amendment's watermelon wheat and lost coast's tangerine wheat. those go without saying. it was fun. it was crazy. i am exhausted.....pics coming soon!

boonville or bust!

Image
it's that time again, kids. the world famous boonville beer festival is here! this year is the tenth anniversary, and it promises to be a wild one! there are 61 participating breweries (as of today), and i can't wait to get up there and set up camp. this is the third year that i have gone with my sister, her husband, and our friends. Of course as a seasoned veteran of this festival, i can't help but offer a few suggestions of my personal favorites....just in case you happen to show up after reading this fabulous blog entry :) 1) 21st amendment watermelon wheat light and refreshing. the perfect summertime brew! 2) bison chocolate stout just like it sounds. full bodied chocolate flavor. yum! 3) da grind buzz kona coffee stout coffee taste without the sour stomach (coffee makes me ill) and here is one brewery i'm not familiar with, but i'm amped to try what they bring: the beach chalet so if you've got nothing to do this weekend, come check it out...and if you ...

SPT--- let me introduce myself : the pop culture addict

Image
it's self-portrait tuesday this month's challenge is let me introduce myself . one thing you will get to know very quickly about me, is that i am a pop culture addict. i love reading about all things music, movies, television, and retaining all of that important knowledge for polite dinner conversation. random, useless, pop culture trivia is like my party trick. ask me something, anything about pop culture, and chances are, i will know the answer. don't ask me how i'm able to retain all of this, i can't even find my keys in the morning most days. Some of the time, i will know things about tv shows and movies that i have never seen. weird, huh? some people might consider this shallow, but i've learned to embrace it over the years. i don't want to be a hollywood gossip hound as a career or anything, but i'll probably continue to read US weekly, INtouch, or any other pop magazine like the one in the picture for as long as my eyes will let me. so, this is me,...
