san jose is for lovers

i have an awesome 80s coffee mug with that slogan. i love it because it's an absurd statement, but also because I was born, raised, and now currently lay my head here. I've always felt that San Jose has so much potential that it rarely lives up to, but for whatever reason, I can't help but love this town. someone else who loves it here is an old classmate of mine, Joshua Santos. He brings us The San Jose Blog! , and I am so happy that someone out there is taking the initiative to hi-light some of the cool stuff about our fair city.

the month of mayhem at kfjc --- 89.7 los altos hills

eight nine point seven. all good listeners go to....

kfjc kicked off it's 50th anniversary celebration with a kick ass listener appreciation party over the weekend. There was food, bowling, fun, and of course music! I did a one hour set, sandwiched between cy thoth , and captain jack --- two giants of kfjc legend. don't ask me to recall the playlist because i can't remember. all i know is that at the end of my set, i decided to end on a special note with the classic "score tonight", a bowling fabulous tongue-in-cheek tribute to the teenage libido. Well, the record continued to run, and so staff and guests alike were treated to an impromptu dance sequence by yours truly and a fellow dj friend who had surprised me by showing up near the end my set. Everything was awesome!! Thanks to all the staff for all their hard work, the listeners for their die- hard dedication, the live bands for coming out to thrash it up, the businesses for donating food and items for the raffle, redwood bowl for opening their doors, and a sp...

baby i swear, it's deja vu

have you been in the middle of a situation, and thought to yourself, "I can't believe I'm back here again !"? well, i have been here before, and i didn't like it the first time. It's work related, but it doesn't have anything to do with loosing my job. Let's just say that transitions are rarely smooth, and although I've had plenty of experience with them over the last 2 years, it doesn't make the next step any easier. You find out a lot about yourself during times like these. I hope I discover that I am stronger than I think, because right now, I feel weakened by a few devastating blows to the gut.

can you believe this is seth rogan?

poor mickey rourke! just days before the biggest night of his life, he looses his best friend :( his beloved chihuahua, loki, passed away monday morning, and no doubt the man is devastated. when he won the golden globe in January, in between thanking marissa tomei for having a hot bod, and calling director darren aronofsky a sonofabitch, rourke expressed the most heartfelt thanks to his dogs, past and present, for being the constant friend and companion to his solitary man. so sad. on a side note, I have not yet seen the wrestler . I am dying to, though. welcome back, mickey smalls

mimosa and a movie sunday : driving lessons

from 2006, Harry Potter's Rupert Grint and Julie Walters star is this Harold and Maude - esque ( though I think it's not romantical)dramadey. Laura Linney co-stars as his obnoxiously overbearing mother -why must all of laura linney's characters be insufferable? i wonder how she feels about that... -sufjan stevens provides much the soundtrack, just as cat stevens provided most if not all of the harold and maude soundtrack -julie walters and rupert grint play mother and son in the harry potter movies! -walters is fantasic! she was one of the best things about "Mamma Mia!" -she is a crazy and eccentic actress who has been married 3 times, was forced to be on a soap for extra money, and is "huge on the gay scene" because of it. -they act out scenes famous shakespearean plays. awesome. -oh! the priest is his dad! I thought maybe it was his uncle, but I forgot, it's only us catholics who are crazy and don't allow their priests are married!....but his w...

my ears (and eyes) are on fire

I am obsessed with Kings Of Leon at the moment. the song and the video. both totally hot. In addition, United States of Tara has reignited my crush on John Corbett who once again comes out looking like the perfect guy. goddam if he doesn't make me want a beer guzzling, truck driving, t-shirt and jeans, works with his hands, kind of man. Life is going pretty well since we last spoke. I'm adjusting to a the new job, and extremely greatful to be employed in this crap economy. I've been hanging out with friends, and trying my best to give healthy eating a fighting chance as a permanent in my daily routine. My new commute provides me with a little extra me time for creative brainstorming. Since it's kind of hard to drive and write, a friend suggested a taperecorder. genius! I often feel like i have good ideas, but they're never put down anywhere for future use. I can only imagine now how hilarious listening to those idea tapes would be six months after I forget I had ...

mimosa and a movie saturday : lost in translation

Image
friends, I have just come up with a fabulous idea. saturday mornings, provided i have nothing on the agenda, i will host " M & M Saturday"- mimosa and a movie. This will be a stream of consciousness thing....thoughts on the movie as I watch it, and become looser with each mimosa....I know most people wouldn't be be caught dead drinking and bloging, but I, as many of you know, am not most people. condsider me that annoying chick who sits in front of you at the movies, and talks throughout the run of the film. Today's pick: *WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD. IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS MOVIE AND DO NOT WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS, STOP READING NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!* the opening sequence is brilliant. something that is hard to forget. her damn asscrack, thinly veiled under worn out, cotton, full butt underwear, faded soundtrack, minimal typeface...very intriguing, not to mention damn sexy. when charlotte's husband gets after her for smoking, she says, "i like it. besides i d...

merry christmas, blogger friends!

I never thought it was such a bad little tree. It's not bad at all, really. Maybe it just needs a little love.

" I Love Your Fannypack!"

The small club was dark, and the energy was contagious. It was 80s new wave dance party night, and Peter and I had been dancing for hours. The dance floor was packed. Scenesters with attitude to spare, thinking they're the shit, fall all over each other while "inventing" their cliche hipster dance moves. I was starting to fade, but Peter is a man posessed, continuing to dance even though his legs are throbbing in pain. I start scanning the crowd. The long haired guy who hasn't slowed down all night, rico suave and his female companion who probably danced at the same club back in the 80s when the songs were new, the girl with the beret who has been center stage all night with drink in hand. Tall skinny guy and his throng of wannabes. That is when I saw it. the perfect fannypack. the girl wearing it is dancing crazy. she has long straight hair, and a carona dangling from her hand, her lanky arms swaying to and fro. I point this out to peter and we want to tell her how c...

olive you

i love olives. i love them so much, that tonight i had them for dinner. i went to safeway and got a container of gormet olives. they were a mix of greek olive medley with feta cheese, and blue cheese stuffed olives. i ate every last one. now i want some more. i want some more olives. i went olive tasting once. i went olive tasting at the olive pit in corning, just off of highway 5. i tasted many olives including ones stuffed with garlic, stuffed with pepper jack cheese, stuffed with spicy blue cheese, stuffed with habenero peppers. that was hot. very hot in fact. very hot but very good. i love olives, yes i do. i love olives. how 'bout you?

all-time, top five, things that are blowin' my mind. right now.

5 things blowing my mind right now 1. . aluminum christmas tree with color wheel a staple of late 50s and early 60s households, these highly flamable aluminum wonders come to life with the help of a rotating color wheel. There is one in the window of a vintage shop in my neighborhood. I could stare at it for hours. I laughed at my best friend when she first told me that her husband wanted one. I passed it off as another side effect of his obsession with all things 50ish vintage 2. living in a great neighborhood within walking distance of cool stuff the fact that i found the great aluminum christmas tree in my neighborhood is a great segway. Last night I had a lovely meal at yummy, affordable greek restaurant. this morning, i walked to the store to pick up a few things, and stopped to get a hot chocolate. tonight, i walked back to gawk again at the christmas tree and snap a photo. Then I stopped to get a slice of my favorite pepperoni pizza from pizza my heart on my way home. it doesn...

bad news travels fast

due to the cryptic nature of my last blog post, I feel the need to clarify. Since the news has hit, i guess there is nothing left to hide. my company, american musical theatre of san jose, has gone bankrupt :( before you go posting messages of sympathy and well wishes let me say 2 things: 1. yes, it totally sucks. It sucks for all the people who have had to clean out their desks. it sucks for the city of San Jose: 75 years of musicals are no more. it sucks for the loyal patrons. 2. there may still be some hope for me and some of my box office peeps. I like games, but the waiting game is the worst one i ever played.

faith-a faith-a faith

Well i need someone to hold me But i'll wait for something more Yes i've got to have faith ~ george michael We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. ~Joseph Campbell the only thing certain in life is that nothing is certain.

born to dance

Image
*image by oude school I took in a performance of the ballet this weekend with my mom and sisters, and it was beautiful. The stretch and extension of their arms and legs, both delicate and powerful, made me feel envious, and little sad that I didn't continue to dance. The intricate footwork, definition of their calves, and the ease with which the male dancers lift the female dancers in the air left me in awe. It was a refined ending to a crazy weekend that started off Thursday with Atomic 80s new wave dance party @ the blank club Peter, his friend nikki, and I, got the party started, and tore up the dance floor for 3 solid hours. Friday it was darts at trials pub with kyle after he finished up a critical mass bike ride. those seem like fun, but i am bikeless and horribly out of shape. list of things to do 1. buy bike 2. used sed bike to get in good enough shape for critical mass 3. become semi-professional dancer after getting in shape by going on many a critical mass bike ride.

Life is sweet whooa yea! sweet as honey (a haha) Happy go lucky me (a haha) Happy go lucky me *laughter fades out* ~paul evans after weeks of trying to make it out to the movies, i managed to take in a viewing of the sweet and affecting, Happy Go Lucky , a film that begs the question, "is it possible to be truly content, especially when others around you can't accept it?" For a film with a seemingly broad concept and vague plotline, there are certainly moments of quiet beauty not to be missed. with one weeke...

at least once a year, i do something drastic to my hair. i have been mulling over what is next for some time now. first i wanted to go super blonde, then i tried on a platinum wig, and put the kibosh on that. then i was thinking stawberry blonde with some platinum highlights. then i was looking at old pics when my hair was auburn. then came Halloween. A last minute costume change put the wig above on my head..and i kinda liked it. my hair is already pretty much cut like that, too....i'm just not sure i'm ready to commit to something so drastic, that's why wigs are so great. the roomie and me have been bonding over old episodes of queer as folk i own seasons 1 & 2, and i've seen all 5 seasons multiple times, but she had never seen it. We've been watching a couple of episodes a night, and it never fails to become addictive.
