thanksgiving 2006: what i am thankful for

Image
1) cameras! (this hobby is going to bankrupt me) 2)family! (even though they piss you off by leaving BEFORE the dinner your mom slaved over) 3)friends! ( emily and her mom saved the day with their wonderful company...and em's homemade dinner rolls will save humanity) 4)a kick ass episode of grey's anatomy! (watching that show in an emergency room is totally surreal. long story. basically mom wasn't feeling so hot, but she got a nice pain shot, and will be seeing her doc on monday) 5)having enough common sense NOT to wake up at 3:00am to go shopping this morning. some people are so crazy. (getting trampled while trying to rush into the WalMart to get my hands on the last copy of george strait's christmas album sounds like a worthwile endeavor to me) is it now acceptable to break out my christmas cd's? i am such a cheese ;)

accidental, yet frighteningly accurate

if i ever wished for a true self portrait, this has to be it. i have a feeling i have this expression on my face more often than not. anyway....woohoo! this week has brought not one , but two new cameras! both of these are from ebay auctions, and i am so very pleased with them. the picture above is from the polaroid sx-70, which i was introduced to by my good friend, insurgentmuse the other is an argus matchmatic two-two tone 35mm that i just thought was cute. apparently, it was prominently featured in harry potter and the chamber of secrets i'm still trying to figure that one out, because it came sans instructional booklet, i've been able to figure out all my other ones so far, so i'll just have to keep at it. i've heard Borat! might be taken out of theatres soon. i hope i get to see it before is banned!

i *heart* the fall

my favorite time of year is here! the leaves are starting to turn and the air is just a little more crisp. time to break out my scarves and stop off at starbucks for a venti peppermint hot chocolate. yum :) just wait 'til the rain begins, and then i'll be the happiest girl there ever was! i know. i'm wierd, but i looooooove the rain. i can't believe it's almost been a full year since i was forced from my little apartment downtown, but i may have finally found another affordable arrangement, and hopefully, i'll be "on my own" again soon. i just really love my life in general right now. i feel so content i can hardly stand it. i still miss my friends that live further away than others, but all in all, things are pretty damn good right now :)

do you see what i see?

hurray! my newest set of duaflex shots are a success. they are still very light, but i am super happy about the way they turned out nonetheless. it was kinda funny the day i went to shoot these. it was a thursday afternoon in mid-september, and the boardwalk was deserted, save for a few tourists and one other photo nerd. we started at opposite ends of the boardwalk, but i noticed that we were photographing all the same things. of course he had his super-nice cannon (huge lens, automatic focus, real expensive looking), and i had my little old box camera, but it doesn't matter because we were both there to do the same thing. for more duaflex fun, go here three new cd's rockin' my world: 1) patent pending by heavens (featuring matt skiba of alkaline trio) 2) the information by beck (album comes complete with sticker sheet so that you can create a customized album cover. 3)) shine on by jet (an excellent follow-up to the equally excellent get born ). i went to my first real...

september has been a strange month for me filled with fresh starts, unexpected events, and tearful goodbyes. that being said, i could think of no better way end such a crazy month than with a crazy night out in san francisco to take in a concert by the glam-disco-dance band, new york's scissor sisters at the warfield. first i must say that the warfield is an outstanding venue. a large theater that feels like a small club, it boasts classic decor and kick ass acoustics. you can feel the history when you walk through its doors. the atmosphere was dramatic and so were the people in attendance. as for the main attraction, they may just be the most fun band out there right now. for me, they are most easily described as the love child of early elton john and abba, with just a dash of the bee gees (mostly due to the strong falsetto of co-lead singer jake shears). they are funky, flamboyant, and altogether fabulous. i danced my ass off during the opening band (a fun killers-esque quintet ...

on the road again

and just in time for hunting season. go figure. i just wanted to let all the people who have been thinking about me and my family know that my dad passed away this morning. i am sad, but feel relieved that his suffering is finally over. i really feel so very lucky to have had such a wonderful father. he was the most patient, understanding, fun, communicative, and loving man. i love you dad. i will miss you. pop in that willie nelson cd, crack open a beer, hit the open road in old betsy, and have fun hunting. here's to you, double d :)

the good girl and the baddasssss

i feel like i've had split personalities for the last week. one minute i'm my sweet jovial self, and then the next i'm kicking ass and taking names, not to mention no shit from anyone. being assertive feels really good to me at first, then it just feels like i was being a complete bee-otch. why is that? i'm reading scars and sweet paradise: the life and times of janis joplin by alice echols. i always thought of janis as this badass. she had this amazing talent, did what (and who) she wanted, and lived this amazing (though far too brief)life. the introduction contains a passage so sad that it made me cry " not long after janis died, a little-known rock journalist published an especially spiteful article about her. it was the night of her new york city debut and she had leveled the place, bewitching the city's notoriously hard-boiled critics. after the show, the guys in the band went out with some pretty young girls, and janis, left alone, wandered off to a bar....

fall on me

Image
well, i'm not super happy about my first set of shots from the duaflex , but at least i got something. right now it's loaded with black and white, so we'll see. fall is upon us. the days are breezier, the leaves on the trees are fuller, i'm starting school in a few weeks, and best of all the season premieres of all my favorite shows are just around the corner. i started my new job as a flower shop delivery driver this week, and i love it :) sure it's stressful (timed deliveries up narrow windey mountain roads where NO ONE has address numbers in plain view kind of sucks) and at times exhausinting (those funeral crosses and sprays are heavy!) but i like it better than the tedious tasks at my other job. and finally after a week, my dsl connection is back! whew, i didn't know how much longer i could last.....

37 years ago today, my parents were married, and my biological make-up was officially cemented in a traditional catholic ceremony at st. mary's church in downtown san jose. my parents have had a very happy marriage thusfar. they are equal partners and communicate very well. they have taught me that faith, trust, love and laughter are far more important than appearances, money, power, and notoriety. i only hope that if i ever decide to get married that i can be as sucessful at it as they have been. happy anniversary, mom and dad.

crossing the bridge

Image
oh yeah. my life is about to change, and i couldn't be more excited...or more scared. what in the hell was i thinking quitting my secure and stable job (with benefits and paid vacation), to go back to school? well, i've come too far to turn back now. my semester is paid for, and i have nothing to loose. being totally unattached at 25 does have it's benefits. i get to do crazy things like this and not feel bad about it. i still struggle with the fear of failure, but i feel good about this next chapter in my life, so across that bridge i go :) i finally turned in my first roll of 120 film. they said it will take 1-2 weeks and the processing costs $5.00, plus 65 cents for each 5 * 5 print. not too bad. i have been to more concerts this summer than i have been to in the last 5 years. so far i've seen : 1. wolfmother, the yeah yeah yeahs, franz ferdinand, the strokes, and afi at bfd 2. peaches, bauhaus ( most boring fucking band i've ever seen) and nine inch nails 3. the...

my 100th post! woo hoo!!! or, how i spent my summer vacation

Image
when i was a kid, a good portion of my summer vacations were spent with my family, on the open road, in good, old, reliable betsy. yes, my parents named our motorhome. she might not look like much, but under that hood is pure grit and determination. she is a true original. there has never been a hill too steep, a highway too narrow, or a road too rocky for her, no sir. i got to thinking about old betsy because i attended a family reunion of my mother's side on saturday, and i got to see quite a few of my cousins that we had vacationed with over the years. all the memories came flooding back to us, and it was pretty neat to recall the fun times that were had by all. my memories of those people and that motorhome will forever be intertwined with those of my father who is still alive, but very ill, and was unable to attend the family reunion. betsy is his, really. his pride and joy. and since he has been gone, she just isn't the same. she may be down, but she's not out. not ev...

these are a few of my favorite things

oh my! the past few weeks have been very fun and busy for me. i have spent most of my time shuffling between home and santa cruz, with a brief (but totally funtastic) visit with a good friend in san francisco, in between. a few suggestions for your next sf trip: -take BART it's cheap (only $10 round trip from fremont to san francisco) and easy to navigate, plus on spare the air days, it's free! -stay at the mosser hotel a wonderfully cozy and charming (not to mention so affordable) boutique hotel centrally located on 4th street @ market. -go to the view lounge on the 39th floor of the san francisco marriott. breathtaking views of the city. we were there at sunset and it was perfect. yummy cocktails too! summertime in santa cruz means on thing to me 65 cent nights at the santa cruz beach boardwalk. this means every monday and tuesday night after 6 between memorial day and labor day (with the exception of 3rd and 4th of july) all rides, hot dogs, pepsi, and most important ele...

captain jack will get you high tonight

Image
and take you to his special island! a girl can dream, right? i saw pirates of the carribean last night. wow! what a fun ride! johnny depp is so effing hot i thought the screen was going to spontaneously combust ;) -i finally got the 620 film for my kodak duaflex IV . then i fumbled through loading it, but it is loaded and i have been shooting. i can't wait to see what it produces. -i saw peaches, bauhaus, and nine inch nails over the weekend. unfortunately: 1) we were a little late, and we missed most of peaches set :( (she was only allowed to play for like, 30 minutes) but on the plus side, we got to see her sing the teaches of peaches during which she stripped down to her hot pink bra and booty shorts, and ran through the crowd dancing with people and drinking their beers. she is awesome, and damn can she wail! 2) bauhaus were on forever . they are old and boring. the highlight of their set was when peaches joined them for one song. this time she came out in a figure skati...

keepin' it cool

Image
i was able to escape the heat for awhile and join my family at the coast. 1. filling up the kiddie pool for my nephew zachary. of course it looked so inviting that i joined him. this is an excellent and cheap alternative to the real thing. my roommates in college often joked about getting one for the bottom of our driveway. we so should have done it. 2. calamari from capitola institution, zeldas . i hate zeldas. they are overpriced and have terrible service, but the calamari is super yummy, and since they are right across the street, i just ordered for takeout. 3. the front lawn through a kalidescope. i saw zack's little kalidescope sitting on the table, so i decided to experiment. this is the front lawn. i think they look like cucumber slices. i ordered some 620 format film for my box camera. 2 rolls of color and 2 of black and white. they should come this week, and i can't wait to experiment!

popcorn. peanuts. packing material. oh my!

my new baby camera came today...hurray! i can't wait to get some film to shoot with. yosemite was a blast. everything was so beautiful. i shot 3 1/2 rolls, so i can't wait to share those too. ugh. summer is offically underway. the weather report calls for triple digits over the next few days. i hope i can survive :) i hate hot weather. if it's over 80, i'm dying. has anyone but me been watching my fair brady ? they are such a trainwreck, but i really like adrienne for some reason. i do think she could do so much better, though. i really miss grey's anatomy having...serious....withdrawals...god i need to get a hobby. any suggestions?

yosemite is for lovers

Image
yeah! we leave tomorrow! i am so excited to be going back to yosemite. it has been about 12 years since i was last there. one of the things i am hoping for the most (besides perfect weather) is that the falls (like the one in the above photo. copyright 1980. by donald joseph purdy.) will be actively flowing. the sound and sight of the rushing water is totally calming and beautiful. by the time i get back, there will be plenty of pictures to share. i just picked up another 4 pack of film last night. i promise though, it won't be 96 pictures of waterfalls. at least no more than 10 ;)

i *heart* parker posey

after watching the house of yes last week, and i thought only parker posey could have pulled off a performance like that in a movie like that, and still remain likeable. she's craaazzyy and i looooooove it! i will watch superman returns just for her. she wrote this for esquire magazine: * number 8 made me laugh out loud Ten Things You Don't Know About Women By Parker Posey | Jul 1, 2006 1. Compulsive hair playing equals great, unbridled passion, but not necessarily directed toward you or toward anyone in particular. In my latest book, The Secret Language of Hair, I attempt to bridge the communication gap between hair gesture and meaning. 2. You know those places that only sell smell-good, girlie products? There is a patron saint of these places—perhaps a cult leader—and that's all I can say. 3. When you see a woman chewing gum, she is counting. Next time you see a woman chewing gum, ask her what number she's up to. 4. Personally, I'm not one for lingerie. It would...
