mommy, i don't feel so good........

i can't eat junk food for days like i used to. it really effects the way i feel now that i am an old fogey. i'm on detox. i saw inside man last night, and i have just one thing to say : clive owen is 50 ways to HOTT! before the movie my friend and i stopped by the new city library to check it out. very nice! there are lots of reading corners and an internet cafe. my attempt to aquire a new card was temporarily foiled however, because of $16.40 in back fines from 1999. i paid them like a good girl, though. so far, the favorite of my new checkouts is the soundtrack to monty python's spamalot one of these days, i'm going to go see a show on broadway. it's thursday kids. don't worry, we're almost there ;)

twelve year-olds don't like sharing their birthdays

i still remember the day of my twelfth birthday. i was miserable, so i threw a huge temper tantrum and pouted by myself outside, playing the new gameboy my parents had given me. what i brat i was. my family hadn't forgotten. they didn't ignore me, or refuse to celebrate. In fact, we had a big party that day....but, it wasn't really for me. That was the krux of the matter. I was miserable and threw a temper tantrum because ever since the morning of march 28th 1992, i have shared my birthday with my niece, cristin. The day in question was actually Cristin's 1st birthday. The day she was born, i couldn't have been happier. i really felt like i got the neatest birthday gift ever. However, her 1st birthday was a different story. a child's 1st birthday is a big deal . i realize that now. time goes by so quickly. cristin is 14 today. she is a teenager. she is going to high school next year. i used to think about this day when she was a baby. i am 25 today . it feels so...

love : televison style

Image
like most women, i'm a sucker for romance. over the years televison has provided it's viewers with some great love stories. Here are my top fiv-er-i mean six: 1) roseanne and dan Conner (roseanne): the perfect blend of humor, romance, and passion (both blissful and combative) make dan and roseanne a love story for the ages. 2) lucy and ricky ricardo (i love lucy): a firey redhead, and a firey cuban? their legendary love story was of the 5 alarm type both on and off screen. While their marriage may not have lasted, lucy refered to desi as the love of her life, and spoke with him on the phone every day until his death in 1986. 3) david addison and maddie hayes (moonlighting): hot, hot, HOT!!!! These two were each other's perfect foils. their witty banter, heated arguments, and crazy adventures running the blue moon detective agency, make these two irresistible to watch. what makes it more interesting is that allegedly bruce willis and cybill shepherd couldn't stand each o...

homes sweet homes

Image
a couple of months ago, my friend, insurgentmuse , who also happens to have been one of my college roomates, gave me this great idea to take pictures of the addresses of the places i have lived in my life. so far most of my moving took place during college at humboldt state. i moved 7 times in 5 years, including moving back to san jose twice. when i visited my sister in february, i went to all of these places in the order in which i lived there. it was both nastaligic and cathartic. i told all the stories of living there to my friend, emily, who had accompanied me on the trip. for more in depth descriptions and more pictures, go here .

my ugg boots will kick your ass

Image
i love my ugg boots. i know they are passe, but i didn't buy them to be fashionable. i bought them to be comfortable, because i am so lazy, the thought of just slipping my feet into something, sans socks meaning even less effort, sounded very appealing. They honestly have been one of my wisest investments. i have had them for a little over 2 1/2 years, and during that time i have managed to get them drenched, stuck in the mud, and set on fire. however, they continue to provide my feet with a warm, dry, and comfortable place to hang out. i have walked them all over humboldt county, and now all over san jose, yet they remain durable and totally intact, save from the small piece at the top of the left foot which was burned off during a druken halloween bonfire. long story short, i believe in the power of the ugg boot. i am now a devotee for life.

tom cruise is such a douche, dude.

Image
bat shit crazy cruise has struck again. he forced comedy central, whose parent company is owned by paramount, the studio producing mission impossible 3, to pull their re-run of the "trapped in the closet" episode of south park wednesday night. he basically threatened not to do any press for the movie. you would think the producers would thank their lucky stars he wouldn't be opening his pie hole, but alas, they too fell victim to the brainwashing and his psyscho demands. at first comedy central said that trey parker and matt stone weren't allowed to talk about it, but in true fashion, the boys stuck their middle finger in the air anyways releasing this statement: " So, Scientology, you may have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun! Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity w...

lovely day for a guinness

Image
i love this. it combines two of my favorite things : guinness and cartoon whales. i have a pair of flip flops from old navy that have a little cartoon whale on them and i love them! so cute. happy st. patricks day to everyone. i don't know about all of you, but my family is irish, so this day is kinda big for us. my mom is making corned beef, cabbage, and red potatoes for dinner tonight, and i am sooooooooo excited. then later on tonight, i'm heading out to partake in the festivities in downtown campbell. guiness, green beer, and one (or maybe two) carbombs. i am very tired today. i didn't get to bed last night until around 3am because i was helping my friend celeste at a salsa dancing event that she hosted with her friend rob. she is supersalcera productions and he is monterey salsa. they rented out the attic is santa cruz, hosted a free lesson, and the band broken english played for the party, and what a party! so much fun. broken english is an awesome band, and everyone ...

tim burton: death of an american cinematic genius

as i was watching ed wood (which is wonderful!) on saturday night, i sat there wondering "what the fuck has happened to to tim burton?" his films used to be so wonderful. the stories were inspired, the scenery beautiful, and the characters wonderfully quirky. i really used to look forward to "a tim burton film", but now all i can think is how they used to be. i haven't seen mars attacks, but i do know that everything before it was magical, and everything after it has been crap. well, a slow decent into crap anyways. There were flashes of the old tim in sleepy hollow, big fish, and corpse bride, but for the most part, something is definitely missing. i won't even dicuss charlie and the chocolate factory, which was so wrong on so many levels it even made me kinda not like my beloved johnny depp, and that is next to impossible. i hold out hope for mr. burton to someday return to fine form, but for now here are my personal recommendations from the his filmograph...

let it snow

Image
i noticed that the hills behind my house were covered at a lower elevation this morning, and apparently, it's snowing today in san jose. the news of this sent everyone in the office running for the front door. does this mean i get to go home? i saw transamerica last night. felicity huffman was robbed! reese witherspoon should have been best supporting actress if she should have gotten a kick in the ass. also, huffman is too good for desperate housewives. before the movie started, there was a preview for winter passing with zooey deschanel, will ferrel, and ed harris. after seeing deschanel in failure to launch earlier in the week ( and believe me she is the only good thing about that stinker) i now have a full fledged girl-crush on her. plus anything with will ferrel is always good. this weekend i will be holed up in my room watching library rentals: six feet under season 2 ed wood eurotrip east of eden the phantom of the opera

exciting thursday post

the only exciting thing about a thursday is that it is almost friday. here are the thoughts currently rolling around in the old noggin: -rooting for my favorite on american idol has never been so hard. the women (with the exception of mandisa) are pretty average. however, the guys are top notch this year. my favorites are taylor, elliot, chris, and gideon. in a way it's good because i will be happy with whomever wins since it will most likely be one of these guys. i am done with seacrest, though. he is so painful in his attepmts to prove his heterosexuality (he's gone so far as to nix his famous tagline, "seacrest out!"). it's okay to be gay, ryan. embrace who you are....on second thought, the gay community may not want you, because let's face it: you're obnoxious. -chloe won project runway. i have to say i am surprised on the whole, but after seeing her collection vs. those of daniel and santino, i can see why. i actually really liked santino's collec...

mr. hoffman, i for one think you are very cute.

Image
"A lot of people describe me as chubby, which seems so easy, so first-choice. Or stocky. Fair-skinned. Tow-headed. There are so many other choices. How about dense? I mean, I'm a thick kind of guy. But I'm never described in attractive ways. I'm waiting for somebody to say I'm at least cute. But nobody has." -philip seymour hoffman congratulations to philip seymour hoffman for winning the best leading actor oscar for capote i highly recommend this film. i walked out of the theatre very much affected by the story and the performances of its stars. *also, as a fan of hoffman in general as an actor, i recommend tour de force performances in: love liza and flawless and small, but memorable performances in: the talented mr. ripley and almost famous and on a totally unrelated note, HOLY SHIT. I MUST HAVE THIS

you want some candy, little girl?

Image
i found this glorious image thanks to ap magazine, and it reminded me to inform those of you who don't already know: the long shelved strangers with candy movie has found a distributor, and will be coming out this year! i've heard mixed things about the movie, and usually movies of cult tv shows = sudden death of a once great thing, but i don't care, i am a die hard strangers fan. i love me some candy. bring it on!

if he were any hotter, the ice would melt

Image
this ladies and gentlemen, is the new face of US men's figure skating: his name is johnny weir and until last night, i had no idea who he was. however, after one performance, one personal profile, one sassy interview, and a few saucy nods at the camera, i'm a huge fan! he's funny, honest, flamboyant, powerful, artistic, talented, and a blast to watch. right now he stands in 2nd place after the short program, and i will be rooting for him during the long program on thursday night. GO JOHNNY!

stupid cupid, stop messing with me

Image
oh, that stupid cupid. but, i really like this little guy by s. britt seriously, i am happy for those who are in love and loving it today...i'm just glad that i'm not a guy because then i would probably feel it necessary to spend hundreds of dollars on roses, chocolates, teddy bears, hotel rooms, jewelry, or whatever other rediculous gifts your sweetie needs to show how much you love them. When i finally have someone to celebrate the day with, i'm going to freak out and go totally overboard. i just know it.

doing it with a celebrity...so bad it's good

when i first heard that some schmuck thought up a show where professional dancers ( and later figure skaters) would partner up with a "celebrity" (i use this term loosely...drew lachey, deborah gibson, todd bridges !?!?!) risking injury or at the very least utter humliation (poor ashley delgrosso. she had to peform for weeks with master "no rythym, didn't even try, no talent" p), i was to say the least, not excited. however this hasn't stopped me from making both dancing with the stars , and skating with celebrities part of my weekly tv schedule. my mom and i watch them together. it's sort of like bonding. these shows are so bad, they are good...american culture at it's finest. i have my favorites too. drew lachey is actually a very good dancer, and tia carrere is so beautiful. she just had a baby, and she looks radiant. over at the ice rink, jillian barbarie can do more than be obnoxious at 7am, and debbie, i mean, deborah gibson was so cute with h...

i'm sooooooo not internet savvy

after a few hours of messing around with colors (while i am supposed to be 100% concentrated on work. right.) this is what i came up with for the blog. i still haven't figured out how to change the green to dark turquoise of my links, but it's a start. enventually, i want to find a cool graphic for my header....somthing to do with "just say no to crappy beer" mixed in with my other main interest, pop culture. well, i'll keep working at it, but until then a few observations about what i tuned into on tv last night. -why can't i stop watching american idol? i know it's sooooooo staged, and i get mad at who ends up winning every year....but i'm addicted, and strangely attracted to simon cowel...WTF IS WRONG WITH ME? one thing that has changed about how i feel about idol since last season is Ryan Seacrest. after listening to kathy griffin tear him a new one (and with good reason. the bastard humliated, degraded, and pretty much molested her at the american...

2001: 2 single gal's oddessy

Image
it's self portrait tuesday : personal history the time: jan/feb 2001 the place: arcata, california the people: jessica (left) margaret (me, right) age: 20 when i look at this picture i think about how close i came to never knowing this girl. i left humboldt after my first year because i was unhappy. i chose to live with my older sister in this awesome house my first year of college because it was more cost effective. I used that house as a safety net, and i never stepped out of that net to try and make friends. i became lonely and miserable. i was convinced that being in humboldt was making me that way, so i left. after a summer at home, i reconsidered, and somehow everything just fell into place. jessica and i met at humboldt state university in the year 2000. we both moved into this crazy house around the same time as another girl named stephanie. we formed this little family and despite the condition of our little house, and out lack of funds, and the fights we would get into, i...

let's go to the movies.

holy crap! when will i be able to see these? probably not for awhile, since i'm not famous, but if i was, i would be heading to the sundance film festival which begun yesterday. i am especially looking forward to : 1. alpha dog- jt showing us that he can do more than rock your body? i wouldn't miss it! 2. the science of sleep- gael garcia bernal is yummy, and the premise sounds fascinating. 3. the hawk is dying- two words: paul giamatti. 4. art school confidential: i have been waiting for another film from terry zwigoff since ghost world, and anjelica huston is in it. do i need another reason? where's my popcorn?

self portrait tuesday

Image
while looking through a photo album with my good friend emily, she pointed out how neat this picture is. sometimes it takes a fresh set of eyes with a different perspective to make you see how special something really is. grandma murtha. late 30s/early 40s. capitola beach. capitola, california. my family has owned a house there for almost 100 years. i spent most of my summers there as a child. Capitola is a beach resort town that has a rich history that i am proud to say my family is a part of. i have a love/hate relationship with the place (mostly stemming from the parking situation, run-ins with the local meter maids, and some annoying tourists) but i consider myself fortunate to have use of the house at will. the house was owned by my maternal grandmother, and since my mother and her mother were as close as could be, we would go over there with her for most of the summer, plus many weekends throughout the year. i feel a connection to the house and the town so deep that when my famil...
