mimosa and a movie sunday : beaches!
here we go again kiddies. i finally have a day to drink mimosa and watch an old favorite. today's pick:
BEACHES. 1988. STARS: BETTE MIDLER, BARBARA HERSHEY, JOHN HEARD. DIR: GARY MARSHALL
so, king of the chick flicks, gary marshall, is at it again. this overly sappy yet completely irresistible tale of a life-long friendship between two polar opposites is one of my favorites. Bette Midler is CC Bloom- the sassy, brassy, needy, bronx born, fame hungry, red head. Barbara Hershey is the "proper, well bred", controlled, type A, Marin County "WASP queen", Hillary Whitney.
They meet as young girls when Hillary, visiting Atltanic City with her father and aunt, looses her way back to her hotel and is guided back by CC. They meet when Hillary, frustrated and scared sits down on some bleachers that CC is hiding out under for a quick smoke.
-myiam bialek, aka, tv's blossom, plays the young CC. is it just me, or does she look like SJP (or sarah jessica parker for those of you living under a rock for the last 10 years.) ? she would have made an excellent young carrie bradshaw had sex and the city come along in 1988....
-iris myandowski: the hand walking queer....ahahahahahhahaha. so true,though. what you look like is 1/2 off what determines wether you or cast or not.
-the use of photobooth. yesssss! it breaks my heart that classic black and white photobooths are becoming extinct. i'm totally getting one for my MTV CRIBS house.
-ive often compared the relationship between CC and Hillary to the one between me and my best friend. i'm the CC, she's the Hillary, In case you were wondering.
-i've got to say some of the 1970s outfits bette wears are great. i would totally sport the flowy tops and sparkle shrugs.
-bette is great in general. I must see her in concert, at least once.
-gary marshall totally uses family members and repeat character actors in all of his films. the kid who walks CC to her rental car is his son, the guy who sings K syrrah is also the bellhop in pretty woman, I'm sure he's been in more....and don't even get me started with Hector Elizando. every one. every freakin' one!!!!
-sometimes i wished my bff would just quit her life and come to where i lived. but arcata wasn't that exciting, although i loved it.
-john heard (aka mr. mcallister from home alone) is adorable in this movie. i can see why they both fall for him.
-the one aspect of the relationship that isn't parallel. we do not have the same taste in men.
-so her friend goes home, and she gets the guy by default. i would probably do that. not without feelings of guilt. but if you really like someone,and they like you, it's bound to happen.
-the cop pulling present day CC over seems superfulous...but then again, could there be trouble ahead?!?!
-why does distance, time and competetion come between BFF's? really, i think if you're truly bff's it wouldn't. not really anyway.....then again, we all have our tiffs, don't we?
-"Back! Back! Back, you brain damaged bag of bones, or i'll have your gassed!"
- "oh, living the high life with hi-ho here!" hahahahahaha!!!
-we've all gotten in heated arguments with our bffs....i with mine, I remember rome, the a cafe in barcelona. we were shouting. spending every sleeping and waking moment with someone else for 8 weeks can be stressful for any relationship.
-um a great dane is not a puppy!
-um of course mrs valdez is wearing a moomoo with multicolored aztec symbols
-um it is 1,000,000 degrees in florida. why is she wearing black leather?
-um CC and john's new york apartment is soooooooo 80s!
-so they stop talking, but CC keeps writing...we're back to the MP & RS = CC and hillary parallel universe.
- so hillary's husband cheats. what kind of woman would go to another woman's house. f**k the husband, stay at the house, wear the wife's robe, and then look at the wife like she's tresspassing when wifey catches them IN HER OWN HOME?!?!? skank!
-the movie co-star in the truck looks like john goodman.
-the makeup fight is so great....totally realistic.
-the friendship has been reformed!!
-i love the stunt doubles during the "baby stroller goes rolling down the SF street" scene. those are men!
-the actor playing the doctor is not attractive. i believe he killed himself by jumping off the brooklyn bridge.
-CC deserts her doctor fiance to go back to nyc an ex john....they never say it, but i think they get back together.
-hillary's daughter is more CC than hillary....hmmmm....
- and of course hillary is diagnosed with a fatal disease. viral cardiomyopothy. and like the lawyer she is, she researches throughly what this means...by the look on her face, it ain't good.
-CC comes to stay with Hill. between CC and hill's daughter victoria, it's a princess battle royal!!
-hills is real sick. she's starting to curse.
-reporter: who is CC bloom?
cc: first i would like to say that CC feels things deeply. she is a deeply feeling person, and because of that is deeply emotional....
reporter: well, i'd love to explore this, um, duality further.... HAHAHAhAHAHAHA!!!
she knows she's full of shit. she is self aware!
-the end is near, i can feel it...ugh.
-she so sick looking. is she like dying or something?. i have the sudden urge to call my best friend....
-so hillary dies. and cc is going to raise victoria. good thing her memory and is long, and she knows everything there is to know about hillary. hillary was counting on that.
