4 ALARM TASTE BUD ASSAULT

Image
When I find something that blows my mind, I tell everyone who will listen, and far too many people that don't about it's greatness. Today's (literally) hot find comes to us from City of Palo Alto Firefighter, Lee Taylor. The peppers that he grows in the firestation backyard made this hotsauce bicycle kick my tastebuds into next week. Not for people sensitive to spicy and bold flavors, I have become addicted after just two brief encounters. Now I know they sell it at Philz's coffee on Middlefield Road in Midtown PA, so I will most likely be picking up a bottle sometime in the near future. Plus, the proceeds beneift a good cause!! I'm in love! *le sigh*

You're Just Like Your Father

If I had a quarter for every time over the years have I heard this come out of my mother's mouth, I would be able to ride the muni around San Francisco for at least a year. My mother doesn't say this to be derogatory. She loved my father unconditionally, but they were very different as far as their philosophies when it came to things like money, life ambitions, and looking out for one's physical well-being, ie, getting enough rest, making sure to put on sunscreen before going out in the sun, etc. I will admit that it has been hard for me to feel a connection with my Dad's side of the family. We would visit more frequently when I was little. I would say at least once a month on a Sunday, we would pack up for the day and head north up through San Francisco. Down 19th avenue, across the Golden Gate Bridge for what seemed like forever. Perhaps the 49er game was on the radio as we made our way to Marin County. We referred to my dad's parents as Nana and Abe. I'm not...

Descending The Spiral Staircase

Yesterday I learned that one of the most kind and unique individuals I have ever met had passed onto the next realm. Phil Herz, aka cy thoth was a man that meant a lot, not only to the people he knew personally, but the people who he reached because of his weekly show on kfjc , and because of the art of the firebunker . Every time I saw Phil he greeted me warmly. I shared the same name as one of his sisters, so he took to calling me by the nickname he used for her, which just so happened to be the exact same nickname my family has given me. I've had several nicknames bestowed upon me over the years, but that one brought a certain feeling of comfort and familiarity with it, so I loved that he started referring to me that way. I wasn't the only person he treated like this. Quite the contrary, he was this way with nearly everyone that crossed his path. It has been a little over 24 hours since the news hit, and many stories have been shared. The people that were closer to hi...

Whether hope dampens memory

This song has been stuck in my head all weekend. As I watched Almost Famous over the weekend, I was struck by how incandescent Kate Hudson is during the scene where Penny Lane is "introduced" to Russell by William. She as an actress and person just gives you so much in that one moment. No words. Just her look, her smile, and how she responds to Russell touching her face. She really does give an awesome performance in that film, and the choice to use the song as the background to their introduction is a great cinematic moment.

I love her. She is my spirit animal. Last night as we picnicked on her living room floor, my best friend and I were watching Beetlejuice: she started giggling uncontrollably after this scene happened. "That is you!!! That is sooooo you!! You would totally do that! I howled in agreement.

Eyes Like Death

His eyes were red and tired. His eyelids were heavy, his expression vacant. He had been laying in the bed day in and day out for over a year. Most days his eyes remained closed. As they had been taken over by severe cataracts, it was worse to have them open most days. He could hear words. Pieces of familiar sounds, voices, names. Sometimes he could pick up a full sentence or two, but mostly it was fuzzy echos. Muffled sounds though distant megaphones. He'd given up on eating. She still tried, but he no longer possessed the ability to swallow properly. Choking to death had always been a great fear. It had nearly taken his life 4 times in the last year, so enough was enough. Besides, his stomach had shrunk to the size of a walnut anyways. Mostly he was just thirsty. Ice chips. he could never have enough ice chips. He also liked music. He liked to be sung to, especially by his wife and daughters. He liked going outside to sit in the sun. The fresh air was much better than the stale st...

I'm fucking bored

Image
"I'm watching deal or no deal with your grandma fucking bored" Both the song lyric from a song by MC purple duck and LaLohan as LaLiz so perfectly describe my current state of mind, I can't stand it. I'm trying to be pro active about this. more action, less talk. The problem is, when you're in a rut, the hardest thing to do is find your way out. One thing is certain : I want to make some BIG changes. Lifestyle, housing, even possibly physical location (ie, another state) and job. I'm drowning but I'm acting like I can't swim. I can swim. Maybe I'm not the strongest swimmer. maybe I'm not the fastest swimmer. I can swim. I will swim. Drowning isn't an option.

sticks and stones

Yesterday I had the day off work, so I decided to run some errands. I stopped off to get my car washed. As I walked though the waiting area where they have popcorn and lemonade to keep you occupied while you wait for your car to be hand washed by what feels like 5 different people, I decided some ice cold lemonade was in order. I had just taken my second paper cup shooter when I decided to wait outside for my car to be presented all shiny and new. As I walked by a dad and his little boy who was I would guess 5 years old, the little boy started giggling a demonic delighted sort of giggle. He was playing some sort of hand held video game, so his father asked "did you get to the next level?" to which the little boy responded, "Daddy! she fat!". It took me a second to realize the little shit was talking about me. I paused for a moment, and waited for the father to admonish his son for saying that. When he failed to even acknowledge the statement, I responded by saying l...

review rebroadcast

I am attempting to rededicate myself to posting music reviews for kfjc online. The entire 6 1/2 year journey of cadillac margarita as a "lady of music" can be found here. sort of. well, as much as I was willing to commit in the form of reviews for music added to the kfjc library. this gives me an idea. to do a show based entirely on things i have reviewed over the years. give it a listen. see of my review is spot on or a crock of shit. maybe for mayhem. maybe.

no tv, no cry

Image
after drowning under the weight of my financial oblgations, I made the decision a few weeks ago to cancel my satellite cable service. DirectTV had been very good to me. I felt very sad having to break up with them after nearly 5 years of home entertainment bliss. They tried to get me to change my mind. They promised me the world if I'd stay, but the truth is, as much as it hurt, I had to move on. I've kept busy through a steady diet of and not to mention the countless other movies and tv shows I own on dvd and vhs. I have yet to start reading more, or exercising, or cleaning my apartment, as I thought I'd might as a result of making this change. However, I see it as a twelve step process to breaking the habit of television dependence. Right now I'm not acting like a junkie... making excuses to visit friends who have cable, or calling DirectTV to beg them to take me back. I am pretty proud of myself for making the sacrifice. It's small in the grand scheme of thing...

may never seemed so far away

a change of space

The time for exploring new locations has come and gone -- stay close to home now. Overview Get started on something new today -- you know what you want, and you know exactly how to get there. Anything you start today is sure to end up taking you somewhere new and wonderful. today's HORRORscope. I know that the trip i was planning to the Portland, Oregon area this coming weekend needed to be postponed, but this is too much. A few months ago, I was so ready for a change of scenery. I even went as far as to make this bold declarations of relocation. This is not uncommon with me. I think the fact that I am still looking for "home" is probably indicitive of many personal issues that I have yet to really face. I will still be taking the time off of work to spend some time giving my current home and hearth some much needed TLC. I know it is what was meant to be.

********************************************************************************** kusf is in exile , and they are doing their very best to get saved. over the weekend, they hosted one of their infamous record swaps. This one at a new location. It was the first I've ever been to, and it certainly won't be my last. when I walk away with jems like the one above, how can a trip up there, and the $5 admission going to benefit KUSF not be worth it?

will she bend it?

I'm going to see Barabara Eden tomorrow at the Castro Theatre. I remember watcthing reruns of "I dream of Jeanie" as a kid and thinking three things : 1) that I wanted my bedroom to look like the inside of her Jeanie bottle 2) I wanted to be like Jeannie II, Jeannie's "evil" twin sister who had dark hair was very naughty. 3) did larry hagman wear a wig? 'cause it totally looks like it. I wonder how many Jeannie's with facial and chest hair I will see.... may she make all of my wishes come true!

yesterday I was sitting in the library looking at a vanity fair coffee table book of famous images that have graced that magazine over the last nearly 100 years, and none of them struck me quite as strong as the one of Anjelica Huston who has always been a favorite actress / woman of mine. To me, she personifies grace and grit, not to mention overall badassery. It happens to be her birthday today, so I decided to post some of my favorite images of Wes Anderson's leading lady. How I wish he would write a film for her, but as my good friend TC pointed out, he's way to male centric for that.
