mimosa and a movie sunday : beaches!

Image
here we go again kiddies. i finally have a day to drink mimosa and watch an old favorite. today's pick: BEACHES. 1988. STARS: BETTE MIDLER, BARBARA HERSHEY, JOHN HEARD. DIR: GARY MARSHALL so, king of the chick flicks, gary marshall, is at it again. this overly sappy yet completely irresistible tale of a life-long friendship between two polar opposites is one of my favorites. Bette Midler is CC Bloom- the sassy, brassy, needy, bronx born, fame hungry, red head. Barbara Hershey is the "proper, well bred", controlled, type A, Marin County "WASP queen", Hillary Whitney. They meet as young girls when Hillary, visiting Atltanic City with her father and aunt, looses her way back to her hotel and is guided back by CC. They meet when Hillary, frustrated and scared sits down on some bleachers that CC is hiding out under for a quick smoke. -myiam bialek, aka, tv's blossom, plays the young CC. is it just me, or does she look like SJP (or sarah jessica parker for those o...

i have 5 rolls of film to develop. despite this fact, i have been slacking on this photography hobby thing. majorly. let's fix that, self. mkay?

hungry for carrots

I have been looking to take up a hobby! this "making music video style montages of favorite clips from my favorite movies" seems like just the ticket....awesome. and ps. where or where is the anne shirley / diana berry bff mischief montage set the classic girls gone wild tune by miz cyndi lauper?? oh, do i really have to say it? i'll give you a hint: the video montage should be entitled "girls just want to have rasberry cordial!"

on murphy's law and my new favorite word

everything that can go wrong will go wrong, or something like that, right? I feel right now at work this strange mix of euphoria (due to a recent promotion) and "oh shit, i'm totally screwed" ness. right now is the best time it seems for people to be having babies, serious health issues, car trouble....take your pick. the entire marketing staff is falling apart. I realize this is a grand test. an opportunity to prove what i'm made of as it were. ("rain on my parade" - Tiffany Liu / tiffanyliu.com) I have decided, after hearing my new favorite word on a pbs financial investment program, that i'm not going to catastrophisize any of this. it's going to be okay. we as a department will survive. my boss can handle this. i can handle this. we are going to rock the shit out of this situation. we've pulled on our galoshes, and now it's time to jump in some puddles!

smile! it's friday!

music is my boyfriend, music is my best friend

let me see a show of hands: how many of us are embarrassed by some of music we used to listen to when we were pre-teen/ teenagers? i am willing to bet all of us have some regrettable LPs/cassettes/cds in our collections. i have this book of cds that represent about 15 years of my musical history, between the ages of 10 through 25. i decided to drag this little treasure trove to work with me today (yes on a Saturday. it's okay, we're proving a point to the big cheese) because I would be bored silly otherwise. This CD book has seen better days. the actual book dates back to about 1999, so it's been through college, and it lived most of the time in the trunk or back of my car being stepped on, thrown around, dropped, jumbled, hassled, and generally abused and neglected by its owner.... Not to mention the number of keggers it attended, the contents spilled over many a beer soaked living room floor. As a result most of the cds are in horrible shape, so i've decided before i ...

things are abrewin'

they are sweet, surprising, and out of my control. being present means you give up on trying to predict the future. never thought i'd be able to do that. now i see clearly what always seemed so blurry. the haze is lifted and i can see the horizon, but not what lies upon it's endless pink and yellow layers. it is good. i will continue this journey because i am compelled to do so.

1! 2! 3! 4!...I declare a parking war!!!

I dislike going to santana row. let's just start with that. going there makes me feel anxious. for whatever reason, it's the place like to see and be seen at in san jose. at the krux of my anxiety about the place is the parking. for starters, there isn't any. you drive around, and around, and around for way longer than you should to find a parking spot in the joint. you start to get desperate, and you follow people to their cars, and you get into fights with total strangers. it's all very irritating. case in point: I had made appointments at LeVande Nail spa for a group of my friends. our appointment was at 2:30 and we got to santana row at least 25 minutes in advance. 20 minutes later, thoroughly annoyed, we were still looking for a place to park. with time running out before the appointment, we finally come upon a parking spot. of course we spot it at the same time as another driver. delirum and fear of missing our appointment made me make the cutthoat decision of tak...

a day in the life : July 7th, 2009

8am- wake up and drag myself to the shower 830am- so fresh and so clean clean. i power up the laptop for morning email check and discover like everything else today (and for the last few weeks), the internets are filled with michael jackson stories, photos, rememberances. today is the memorial. i don't set the dvr. i will later regret this decision 915am- leave for work with kashi protein bar in hand. bumping lady gaga on my way to work while macking and snacking the kashi. i wonder, will her pop domination continue or will she fizzle out and fade away? 945ish- arrive at work. notice there are bagels in the kitchen. yessssssss. make a quick stop at my desk to power up the 'puter, and say "mornin'!" to the new boss, then it's back to the kitchen to procure a bagel before the vultures start to circle. 10am- bring up playlist.com and summer jammzz to make the day go by... work, work, work, blah, blah, blah 130pm- lunch break! i'm broke bitches! time to make m...

san jose is for lovers

i have an awesome 80s coffee mug with that slogan. i love it because it's an absurd statement, but also because I was born, raised, and now currently lay my head here. I've always felt that San Jose has so much potential that it rarely lives up to, but for whatever reason, I can't help but love this town. someone else who loves it here is an old classmate of mine, Joshua Santos. He brings us The San Jose Blog! , and I am so happy that someone out there is taking the initiative to hi-light some of the cool stuff about our fair city.

the month of mayhem at kfjc --- 89.7 los altos hills

eight nine point seven. all good listeners go to....

Image
kfjc kicked off it's 50th anniversary celebration with a kick ass listener appreciation party over the weekend. There was food, bowling, fun, and of course music! I did a one hour set, sandwiched between cy thoth , and captain jack --- two giants of kfjc legend. don't ask me to recall the playlist because i can't remember. all i know is that at the end of my set, i decided to end on a special note with the classic "score tonight", a bowling fabulous tongue-in-cheek tribute to the teenage libido. Well, the record continued to run, and so staff and guests alike were treated to an impromptu dance sequence by yours truly and a fellow dj friend who had surprised me by showing up near the end my set. Everything was awesome!! Thanks to all the staff for all their hard work, the listeners for their die- hard dedication, the live bands for coming out to thrash it up, the businesses for donating food and items for the raffle, redwood bowl for opening their doors, and a sp...

baby i swear, it's deja vu

have you been in the middle of a situation, and thought to yourself, "I can't believe I'm back here again !"? well, i have been here before, and i didn't like it the first time. It's work related, but it doesn't have anything to do with loosing my job. Let's just say that transitions are rarely smooth, and although I've had plenty of experience with them over the last 2 years, it doesn't make the next step any easier. You find out a lot about yourself during times like these. I hope I discover that I am stronger than I think, because right now, I feel weakened by a few devastating blows to the gut.
